Hurricane Sandy

The New York Marathon was suppose to be held on November 4th 2012 in New York, but was suddenly cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy swiping the country. Hurrican Sandy was a hurricane that devastated areas of the Caribbean, the Mid-Atlantic, Northeastern United States and Eastern Canada in late October, a few days running up to the Marathon.  Hurricane Sandy, is one of the eighteenth named storms and tenth hurricane out of 2012 hurricane seasons to destory these area’s. Hurricane Sandy was a Category 2 storm at its starting point.

Hurricane Sandy was one of the worst storms in America. In Atlantic City were the storm started, most of the city was under water. Sandy left many people homeless with their houses wrecked.

Hurricane Sandy – the largest Atlantic tropical system on record – made landfall just south of Atlantic City, New Jersey, bringing winds up to 90 mph, and pushing a massive storm flow onto beaches and shorelines. At least 12 deaths have been reported in the United States. The death toll, when added to the previous toll in the Caribbean, leave Hurricane Sandy responsible for taking more than 80 lives. Millions of people across the Eastern Coast are now without power, and  more are struggling with rising floodwater.

Many organizations have contributed to the hurricane relief effort. Disney ABC Television Group held a Day of Giving on Monday the 5th November, a day after the New York Marathon was suppose to comence, raising a total of $17 million on their television stations for the American Red Cross. NBC raised $23 million during their Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together Telethon and News Corporation donated $1 million to relief efforts in the New York Metropolitan area . The United Nations and World Food Programme said they will send humanitarian aid to at least 500,000 people.
